Granta Best of Young American Novelists 2

Kevin Brockmeier

Kevin Brockmeier was born on December 6, 1972 and raised in Little Rock, Arkansas, where he still lives today. He is the author of two novels, The Brief History of the Dead (John Murray/Pantheon) and The Truth About Celia; a short-story collection, Things That Fall from the Sky (Pantheon); and a trio of children's books. He has taught creative writing at the University of Iowa, the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, and Grinnell College. His minor eccentricities are legion. 'Parakeets' is taken from his forthcoming collection of stories, The View from the Seventh Layer.

Well, you got one right. 'The Brief History of the Dead' and 'The Truth About Celia' are great American novels in the Not-Pynchon style: old-fashioned storytelling mixed with a fabulist's gift for Different.

I'm a high school teacher, and I haven't found another novelist I can bring into the classroom that is both accessible to people who haven't read (and won't ever read) 'Lot 49' and challenging enough to avoid those simple discussions about What Hurt Means that drive most of my colleagues to scotch dependency.
